Dean's Corner January 2014

Welcome to 2014 and all the exciting new opportunities and challenges the Lord has in store for each of us. I carry a large administrative role as Dean of the College of Arts and Sports and it is a privilege to serve in this capacity.  I get to work with incredible people across the nations who are called and committed to follow the Lord in the fields they are passionate about.

Recently I was talking to my husband about our next move and where the Lord is calling us. As we spoke I became excited about the prospect of doing community events with local churches to reach out to those who don’t know Him.  We are considering possibilities like Christmas carols in the park, Easter events, festivals, movies under the stars, block parties, concerts for youth and ways to reach young mothers and their children. We’ve done these events across the nations, so how do we develop a prototype locally? I get so excited just at the thought of organizing events involving a wide range of Christians who have a passion to reach those who won’t dare enter a church building.

In 2003 I wanted to help train up a new generation of event managers internationally to impact their cultures and so we started Schools of Event Management (SEM). I love taking students to get involved in Olympic arts outreaches from Beijing to London or to help celebrate local New Year’s Eve or national holidays.I’m excited to see the passion, vision, flexibility and determination these students show in managing their events.

Event Management is a skill that can bridge the gap to the lost and it only takes people with a call and commitment. I’ve asked Luzanne, a top student in the first SEM and now an experienced SEM leader to share more with you. I know you’ll read her testimony with great interest.

Julie Spence.
