Post Olympic Thoughts: Worship, Surrender & The Holy Spirit

I love the Olympics! Get me a couch and call me a potato – there’s nothing better than watching amazing human accomplishments and not having to exert more energy than is required to operate the remote control.

During these games I’ve often thought of the parallels between amazing sportsmen and women, what they can achieve, the records that they continue to break… and those that lead the way in the music world. Those that do things that we never thought possible on their chosen instrument – those that inspire us to do more, try harder, and believe that even more is possible – where would we be without these innovators?

In the worship world there is another unique group that has a certain level of natural (God-given) talent but are aware of both a special ingredient and a necessary posture that takes them places beyond themselves and, by God’s grace, takes others along with them.

The ingredient? The Holy Spirit

The necessary posture they seek? Surrender.

They do their best to pull back the veil and help people see God…and not block the view. All the while realizing that it’s only in Him and through His power and anointing that amazing things can happen.

Worship is empty without this. The most it can be is a good performance. As we seek a generation of worshipers to lead us, may these things be at the top of the wish list.

Young Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas spoke to a journalist soon after her Gold medal win saying:

It is everything I thought it would be; being the Olympic champion, it definitely is an amazing feeling. And I give all the glory to God. It’s kind of a win-win situation. The glory goes up to him and the blessings fall down on me.

It confirmed what I had suspected as I watched her glide across the floor mat wearing her signature joyful smile during her final routine that sealed the gold; she was worshiping and the blessing was obvious! My remote control finger was motionless and my heart was moved in a familiar and soul-stirring way.
