About Youth With A Mission

Youth With A Mission is an international movement of Christians from many denominations dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM (pronounced "WYE-wam"), our calling is to know God and to make Him known. Back when we began in 1960, our main focus was to get youth into short-term mission work and to give them opportunities to reach out in Jesus' name. Today, we still focus on youth, and we also involve people of almost every age (even many people who choose to spend their "retirement" in active service). Our many ministries fit into three main categories: evangelism, training and mercy ministry. We are currently operating in more than 1000 locations in over 149 countries, with a staff of nearly 16,000.

History of YWAM and the Arts

YWAM has used the arts effectively for years through street dramas and worship teams traveling across the nations.  After the establishment of the University of Nations in 1989 our training in the arts began to take on more structure.  While it has always been a part of the basic DTS (Discipleship Training Schools) now we began to develop Schools of Music and Schools of Dance and Drama and Performing Arts.  The variety now available is just the beginning –  there is so much more.   This website is an outgrowth of our passionate desire to encourage Christian artists everywhere in their pursuit to creatively serve the Kingdom of God.

The Arts as a Sphere of Society

The arts are among the greatest influences of any culture. Where there is man, there is culture and there is creativity and art. Without a doubt, man’s desire to create is a natural response of being created in the image of God-the Creator. In the beginning God gave the mandate to Adam and Eve to subdue the earth as creative stewards, and indeed, since that time, whether for better or worse, man has designed his dwellings, cities and nations with creative pursuits.  Every good and perfect gift is given by the Father and mans propensity to create artistically is one of those gifts.

A major foundational value in YWAM is that there is no separation of secular and sacred.  What we mean by that is that it is equally pleasing to God when we spend our life as a business man demonstrating Godly integrity, or a teacher planting truth in young hearts, or a dancer or fine artist demonstrating beauty and creativity  - as it is to serve full time in the church or as a missionary.  There is no area of life that God did not create nor which he does not want to saturate with His presence.  The ‘seven spheres’ of society is an outgrowth of this philosophy.

The arts are many times referred to as ‘Celebration’ sphere of society and as such are combined with sports and large events of all kinds.  So our College of Arts has recently become the College of Arts and Sports.  We look forward to working with our athletic brothers and sisters in creating many opportunities for Celebration of who He is and what he desires to accomplish in every sphere of society.
